French restaurant review: Au Rocher de Cancale

I’m back reviewing restaurants I’ve chanced upon during my numerous rendezvous around the City of Lights.

The above photo is courtesy of Wikipedia and explains my attraction to the quaint 1804 establishment located along the crowd attracting street of Montorgueil in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris.

It’s really not because of the reviews from numerous tourists trying the restaurant’s dishes that I’ve decided to bring my visiting niece and her hubby for dinner. I just have this thing for history and façade.

Most French restaurant turn out delicious dishes if a good chef is on board. And of course, it’s rare for a chef from generations of family chefs to be in an establishment unless it’s family owned and the passion passes through generation to generation.

It’s always good to try and see if you can spot the difference in the touches to a dish.

Last evening, we all agreed to try a dish we personally wanted to have, and to share a few bites to check on each other’s choices. Typical of Filipinos as we’re always generous and sharing as well as selfless by nature. I must say it was extremely hard to share anything, until the last two-three forkful of each dish.

We started with escargot and ordered two starter dishes together with two types of red wine and a rosé for me.

That entrée quickly disappeared as slowly as we savoured them because they were predictably delicious, especially when you dip good baguette morsels into the buttery, herbal, garlicky sauces. Divine, and definitely hit the spot and revving mode for us.

We then went straight for the main course, and my niece has a wonderful cod dish which she enjoyed tremendously.

Her husband has a supreme roast chicken which definitely didn’t last long. He appreciated the dish very much.

And I had duck breast, which I didn’t have for quite a while. I’m definitely in France and the dishes affirms that you can’t really go wrong with some selections on the menu.

Dessert was shared but truly excellent! The Apple crumble with the dollop of vanilla ice cream made us all feel contented and ready for dreams the remainder of the night.

Overall, go here if you’re not too picky with food and want to see this old restaurant with it pastel blue and charming façade. Alternatively, have a cup of coffee, relax and just people watch.
